Red Alert in Uttarakhand: Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Chardham Yatra
Uttarakhand is grappling with intense weather disturbances as heavy rainfall and unexpected snowfall have blanketed the higher altitudes of Kedarnath and Yamunotri.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts in Uttarakhand amid continuous torrential rainfall. Districts under alert include Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pauri, Nainital, Bageshwar, Almora, and Champawat. The IMD’s warning indicates the possibility of extremely heavy rain over the coming days, raising the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, and widespread disruptions.
Chardham Yatra Temporarily Suspended for Safety
In light of worsening weather conditions, the Uttarakhand government has suspended the Chardham Yatra—an annual pilgrimage to the revered Himalayan shrines. Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey appealed to pilgrims to avoid traveling beyond Rishikesh. Those already on their way have been asked to stop at their current locations and wait for the situation to stabilize. This precautionary measure is aimed at ensuring the safety of devotees amid the risks of road closures and falling debris.
Landslides and River Surges Create Critical Challenges
Continuous downpours have triggered landslides across various regions, causing major road blockages on routes leading to pilgrimage destinations. The highway to Badrinath, in particular, has been affected at multiple points due to accumulated debris and rockfall. Meanwhile, water levels in key rivers like the Alaknanda have risen sharply and are now approaching danger levels. This has intensified concerns about possible flash flooding and property damage in downstream areas.
Government on Alert Mode, Response Teams Deployed
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has issued instructions to all district magistrates and disaster response units to remain on high alert. The state administration is closely tracking the situation through its emergency control centers. Local authorities have been instructed to initiate evacuation protocols if required, and relief shelters have been prepped to accommodate affected populations. Medical teams and rescue personnel are on standby across vulnerable districts.
Public Safety Measures Issued
- To safeguard residents and pilgrims, the government has issued several advisories:
- Postpone Travel: Individuals are advised to delay any plans to visit the hill regions until weather conditions improve.
- Stay Prepared: Residents in high-risk zones should keep emergency kits ready, including food, water, flashlights, and essential medicines.
- Follow Official Channels: People must stay updated via official weather bulletins and only act on verified instructions from disaster management authorities.
Pilgrims Urged to Cooperate
Authorities have emphasized the importance of public cooperation in these difficult times. The Chardham Yatra attracts thousands of pilgrims every season, and managing such large-scale movement during inclement weather is a daunting task. Officials have stressed that the temporary suspension is in the best interest of public safety and that the yatra will resume once conditions allow safe passage.
A Cautious Wait as Clouds Linger
With red alerts still in place and rain expected to continue in the coming days, Uttarakhand remains on edge. Residents, tourists, and pilgrims are urged to exercise extreme caution, follow safety protocols, and support government efforts to manage the unfolding situation. The state’s resilience and preparedness will be key in minimizing loss and damage during this critical period.
