PM Modi Congratulates Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla for Axiom-4 Mission Success
In a monumental achievement for Indian space exploration, Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has embarked on a historic journey to the International Space Station as part of the Axiom-4 mission

Indian Air Force Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla etched his name in history as the first Indian to visit the International Space Station (ISS) since Rakesh Sharma’s landmark journey in 1984. Piloting the Axiom-4 mission, Shukla embarked on a 14-day voyage alongside astronauts from Hungary, Poland, and the US. This multinational mission, a collaboration between NASA, ISRO, and Axiom Space, marks a significant milestone in India’s space ambitions, showcasing its growing prowess in global space exploration.
A Proud Moment for India
The successful launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida was met with nationwide celebrations, with watch parties in schools and communities, including Shukla’s alma mater in Lucknow. His journey symbolizes India’s resurgence in human spaceflight, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to scientific advancement and international cooperation.
The Axiom-4 Mission
As the mission pilot, Shukla is responsible for monitoring critical flight systems and supporting crew safety aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule. The Axiom-4 crew, led by veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson, will conduct over 60 scientific experiments, including seven proposed by Indian researchers. These experiments focus on space nutrition and life support systems, laying the groundwork for ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission, India’s first crewed spaceflight scheduled for 2027.
Shukla’s Journey to the Stars
A seasoned test pilot with over 2,000 flying hours, Shukla’s expertise and determination have made him a beacon of inspiration for young Indians aspiring to reach the stars.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Shukla’s mission includes a space-to-earth outreach program, where he will engage with Indian students through STEM activities. By carrying cultural items like aamras and a swan toy to the ISS, he bridges India’s heritage with its futuristic ambitions, inspiring a generation to dream big.
