New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on Friday after Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed a decisive win in parliamentary elections and said that "India will continue to support democratic Bangladesh."

What did PM Modi say?

PM Modi, while congratulating, said that "this victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership."

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote, "I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership."

PM Modi further said that India will continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.

"India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals," Prime Minister Modi wrote.

What did BNP say?

BNP Media cell in a social media post declared that the party has secured a majority in the parliamentary polls and is set to form the government.

Taking to X, the BNP Media cell wrote, "The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-BNP is set to form the government after winning the majority of seats."

What about the seat count?

The Tarique Rahman-led BNP and its allies are leading in 212 of 299 seats and the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance is ahead in 70 seats.

Why was this election considered so important?

This was the first major election in the country after the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. For the people, it was not only an opportunity to cast their vote but also a hope for a new beginning.
