The hearing has begun on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's petition against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal.
New Delhi: The hearing has begun on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's petition against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee herself attended the hearing and was seen at the forefront of the line of lawyers.
What happenned during the hearing?
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, Mamata Banerjee said, "I am from this state, I can explain." She first greeted the three judges and then continued, "We are not getting justice. I come from a humble background, but I am fighting for my party." To this, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) said, "The West Bengal government is also fighting the case. Legal experts like Sibal and Gopal are arguing." Mamata replied, "When lawyers have been fighting from the beginning, when things have been repeatedly put on record, when six letters have been written to the ECI and not a single reply has been received, it is natural to feel that justice is stuck somewhere in the back door. Give me five minutes." The CJI responded, "We have no problem, we will give you 15 minutes, but please listen to us first."
The CJI told Mamata, "Every problem has a solution. We will find a solution to this problem as well. Your state government is also present here. Your party is also here. You have the country's most senior lawyers. We have acknowledged the problems you have raised – they are on record, but every problem has a solution." To this, Mamata said, "First, allow me to speak and finish. I want to present some photographs. All the Bengali newspapers have published them. We want a solution to the problem. We will not shirk our responsibility. We agree that the issue raised by Mamata Banerjee is genuine. We also do not want anyone to be excluded from the voter list due to language difficulties or differences in spelling of names."
What did Mamata Banerjee say?
Mamata Banerjee said that some daughters have moved to their in-laws' homes after marriage, but their names have not been included in the voter list. "The Election Commission is violating your orders. Several BLOs (Booth Level Officers) have died. Bengal is being targeted, why not Assam? The Election Commission is violating your orders. Several BLOs (Booth Level Officers) have died," Mamata Banerjee further stated.
Following this, the CJI said that he would not comment on Aadhaar at this time, as their decision is reserved. To this, Mamata replied that these people are not accepting government and domicile certificates, and that the Election Commission is a "WhatsApp Commission." The Election Commission objected to this, stating that the accusation that the commission is not cooperating with the state government is false. The CJI said, "Madam Mamata, there is no doubt about the capabilities of your lawyer, Shyam Diwan. You have chosen a very good lawyer."
