A shocking case of alleged rape surfaced at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) in Joka, Kolkata, involving a female student. The accused, a second-year MBA student named Mahaveer Toppannavar, allegedly confessed to Kolkata Police that he mixed intoxicating pills into the victim’s cold drink, escalating concerns about campus safety.

According to police reports, the accused allegedly admitted to drugging the victim, a 23-year-old fellow student, during an off-campus gathering. However, discrepancies have emerged between his account and the victim’s complaint, which alleges sexual assault after she lost consciousness. The Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed to probe the case, is grappling with these inconsistencies. Adding complexity, the victim’s father has publicly denied the rape allegations, claiming his daughter was injured in an auto-rickshaw accident and hospitalized, not assaulted.

Accused Confesses to Drugging Victim

The SIT, comprising nine members and led by a senior officer, is meticulously examining evidence, including CCTV footage from the Joka area and medical reports from SSKM Hospital, where the victim was treated. Forensic analysis of the cold drink container is underway to confirm the presence of sedatives. The accused has been detained under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, but no formal charges have been filed pending further clarity. Police are also interviewing witnesses from the gathering to resolve the conflicting accounts.

The incident has sparked outrage among IIM-C students, with protests demanding stricter safety measures. The institute issued a statement expressing concern and promising full cooperation with authorities. Women’s rights groups have called for swift justice, emphasizing the need to address sexual violence on campuses.
