New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday filed a Rs 500 crore civil and criminal defamation case against senior Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi and termed the allegation levelled against him during a Congress press conference as "false, malicious and defamatory".
What did Himanta Biswa Sarma say?
Hours after Gaurav Gogoi's allegations during the press conference, Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X and wrote, "Today, I have filed a defamation case seeking Rs 500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference."

Earlier, Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that he will initiate both civil and criminal defamation proceedings
Taking to X on Monday, the Assam CM wrote, "I am initiating civil and criminal defamation proceedings on 9 February 2026 against @JitendraSAlwar, @bhupeshbaghel, @GauravGogoiAsm and @DsaikiaOfficial for making false, malicious and defamatory statements against me in today’s press conference. The era of hit-and-run politics is over. If they have even an ounce of courage or evidence, let them prove every allegation before a court of law. I will not be intimidated by propaganda, coordinated slander, or political theatrics of so-called slaves of Gandhi family."

The development comes after, Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Monday claimed that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s family had grabbed around 12,000 bighas of land, which is over 3,960 acres, across the state.
Gogoi made these allegation during a press conference at the state Congress headquarters, which was also addressed by Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, All India Congress Committee General Secretary (in-charge of Assam) Jitendra Singh and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel.
