Pune: There is mourning in the streets of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The poisonous liquor extinguished the lamps of 18 houses here. Many people are still battling for life and death in the hospital. In the initial investigation it became clear that methanol poison had been mixed in the liquor. One sip took people's breath away. As soon as the news came, the government came into action. 22 officers and employees of police and excise department were suspended overnight. Now the entire file is handed over to CID.
Where did the supply of poisonous liquor spread from?
According to the investigating agencies, the network of poisonous liquor was spread in many areas of Pune city and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Police suspect that the liquor prepared by mixing methanol was being sold at cheap prices. The worst affected areas include Phugewadi, Dapodi, Hadapsar and Kalepadal. During investigation, it was revealed that many victims had complained of vomiting, dizziness and stomach pain just a few minutes after drinking alcohol.
Where did methanol come from?
While investigating the case, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raided a warehouse in Bhiwandi in Thane district and seized 5,929 kg of methanol. Officials say that the same chemical was used to prepare poisonous liquor. Investigation has also revealed that this substance was transported to Pune through the supply chain. Many businessmen and suppliers are on the radar of agencies.
Who has been arrested?
Police and Excise Department have so far arrested eight people. A young man named Yogesh Wankhede has emerged as an important link in the investigation. Officials allege that he had supplied liquor mixed with methanol. During interrogation, many more names have come to light, on the basis of which raids are being conducted continuously.
Why did the blame fall on 22 officers?
The state government has admitted that this accident happened due to not taking timely action against illegal liquor trade. For this reason, many officials of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police along with Excise Department employees were also suspended. These include senior police inspectors, sub-inspectors and many employees. The government says that those who are negligent will not be spared at any cost.
What announcement did the government make for the families of the victims?
Maharashtra government has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased. Apart from this, the local body has said that an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh will be given. Some public representatives have also assured to provide employment to a member of the affected families. The state government says that all possible help will be provided to the affected families.
Why did the opposition corner the government?
After the incident, opposition parties have raised questions on law and order and administrative system. NCP (SP) and other opposition leaders alleged that illegal liquor trade was going on for a long time, but the responsible departments did not take timely action. The government says that action is being taken against the culprits under serious sections like murder and the entire network will be dismantled.
What will happen next now?
The CID team is investigating the entire matter. The police is investigating the entire chain from preparation of liquor to supply and sale. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also given instructions to run a special campaign against illicit liquor across the state. Officials claim that after the completion of the investigation, strict action will be taken against everyone associated with this network.
