Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announces resignation, paves way for Sher Bahadur Deuba

In a shock decision, Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli declared that he will resign as Prime Minister after 14 months to pave the way for Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to assume the mantle. The announcement was made by Oli in the first session of 'Pre-Planning Forum Nepal' in Kathmandu, where he said that he will hand over the power with dignity to Deuba.

Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has dropped a bombshell into the nation's politics with an unexpected statement: he'll resign as PM within a couple of months and leave the office to Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. The bolt from the blue has caused a shock wave in the country, triggering high-level speculation regarding the fate of Nepali politics

Deuba to become Prime Minister for sixth time

Oli humorously said that Deuba has already had several chances to be the Prime Minister and has served five times and is now going to be the Prime Minister for the sixth time. "Now, after 14 months, I will graciously relinquish the chair and say, 'Come, Mr. Prime Minister,'" Oli said.

Oli's future plans

Upon retiring as Prime Minister, Oli will also give up the position of Chairman of the Planning Commission. He was aware that it is a question of luck and coincidence that one holds such positions and insisted that many capable persons have not yet received the chance.

Consequences for Nepali politics

This shift is viewed as an important sign of power transition in coalition politics in Nepal. Though Deuba has not issued any public statement about the announcement, Nepali politics indicates that power equation change will happen within a few months. The issue lies in whether or not this transition will take place peacefully or increase more chaos in the politics of the country.
