New Delhi: Iran released 10 Indian sailors after nearly 10 months of imprisonment. The Directorate General of Shipping confirmed this news late on Tuesday night. All these sailors were working on an oil tanker named MV Harbor Phoenix. In July 2025, Iran had stopped this ship near Jask Port. Since then the entire crew has been in custody. Their families in India were pleading with the government every day.

Why did Iran stop the ship?

MV Harbor Phoenix is a Palau-flagged oil tanker. Maritime tracking data shows the ship was near the Strait of Hormuz when it was intercepted by Iranian agencies. Iran did not give any clear reason then. But sources say that there was suspicion of breaking the rules of fuel transportation. Iran often stops ships that are accused of breaking sanctions or smuggling oil. After stopping the ship, the Indian crew was taken into custody there.

What did the Indian government do for the release?

Instead of making noise in this case, India worked quietly. The Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy in Tehran and the Directorate General of Shipping together kept talking to Iranian officials. Statements in the media were avoided so that the matter does not get worse. Iran agreed after several rounds of meetings. Experts say that the old relations between India and Iran also helped. Without making any noise, the work was done through diplomacy.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?

This is the busiest oil lane in the world. About 20% of the world's oil passes through here. India also imports more than 60% of its crude oil through this route. A small disruption can cause oil prices to fluctuate all over the world. Since the increase in tension in West Asia, Iran has made checking here very tight. Every suspicious ship is being stopped and interrogated.

Is this matter related to the tension in West Asia?

Tension is high between America, Israel and Iran. Iran has already stopped many foreign ships. The charges are the same: breaking sanctions or illegal oil trading. The situation was critical for India. There is old friendship with Iran, there is investment in Chabahar Port. There is also a strategic partnership with America and Israel. In such a situation, India worked by maintaining a balance and evacuated the sailors safely.

Now when will the sailors reach home?

Officials said all 10 sailors are absolutely fine. Currently the paperwork is being completed. After formalities like passport, exit permit, they will be brought to India by flight. This is the biggest good news for the families who have been waiting for 10 months. There is a festive atmosphere in many homes. The government has said that within a few days everyone will be among their people.
