Tehran: Tension has once again deepened in West Asia. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the temporary closure of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz until further orders, accusing US interference. After this step, concerns about global oil supply and maritime trade have increased.

Why did Iran close the Strait of Hormuz?

According to the IRGC, a foreign ship was trying to pass through the strait without following the prescribed sea route. A shot was fired at the ship as a warning. Iran then announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the US intervention ended.

How did America respond?

The US military alleged that a Cypriot-flagged container ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by Iranian forces. In response, America started military action on several Iranian targets early Sunday morning.

According to reports, explosions were heard around Bandar Abbas, Sirik and Qeshm Islands. There have also been reports of explosions in the southern cities of Bushehr and Asluyeh.

What did Mojtaba Khamenei say?

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, considered the successor to Iran's supreme leader, has vowed to avenge the killing of his father Ali Khamenei. He said that revenge is the desire of the entire Iranian nation and it will definitely be answered.

Why is the Strait of Hormuz important for the world?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime trade routes. Large quantities of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) pass through this route. In such a situation, its closure may affect the international oil market, shipping industry and energy supply of many countries.

Why is stress increasing instead of decreasing?

Despite recent efforts for an agreement between America and Iran, there remains tension in the relations between the two countries. Iran alleges that the regional activities of America and Israel are against the spirit of the agreement, while America is talking about maintaining unhindered movement on sea routes.

Meanwhile, the military activities of both countries have once again increased the possibility of a major conflict in West Asia.
