Australia Palestine Recognition: After Two European Countries, Australia Will Recognize Palestine, PM Albanese Announced
Australia will recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, to bolster a two-state solution and peace efforts. Australia has secured conditions for governance reform, disarmament and recognition of Israel from the Palestinian Authority, as well as supporting the Arab League's stance to remove Hamas from Gaza.

Australia Palestine Recognition: Australia has announced that it will officially recognise the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a joint statement that the move is aimed at bolstering international efforts for a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. They said the decision would break the cycle of violence in the Middle East and strengthen the historic global momentum towards peace.
The statement said that since 1947, Australia has supported the existence of Israel. That year, Australian Foreign Minister Evatt chaired the UN committee that recommended the establishment of two states, Israel and Palestine. Australia was the first country to raise its hand in favour of Resolution 181 at the UN. Now, 77 years later, the world cannot wait any longer.
Netanyahu accuses the government
The Australian leadership accused Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's government of destroying the possibility of a two-state solution through the rapid expansion of illegal settlements, threats to annex the occupied Palestinian territories and open opposition to the State of Palestine.
PA undertakes governance reform
The statement also said that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has promised to reform governance, stop paying prisoners, improve the education system, disarmament and hold general elections. Also, it has reiterated Israel's right to exist. According to the Australian government, the Palestinian President has reiterated these promises directly to Australia.

Demand To Quit And Disarm
The Arab League has also for the first time demanded that the terrorist organization Hamas give up its rule in Gaza and surrender its weapons. According to Albanese and Wong, this opportunity is the best time to support moderate voices, weaken radicalism and isolate Hamas. The Prime Minister reiterated the demand for the immediate, unconditional and honorable release of hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023. He made it clear that Hamas can have no role in the State of Palestine.
Appeals to the international community
The statement criticised the Netanyahu government for ignoring the appeals of the international community and its failure to fulfil its legal and moral obligations in Gaza. Australia said Israel must ensure the safety of civilians and food and medical supplies, and that permanently displacing people is illegal. Finally, Albanese and Wong said Palestinian children should have a future that is completely different from their harsh reality today, and that is the main purpose of this recognition.
