Malayalam actor arrested in hit-and-run case outside Trivandrum Club; two youths injured

A police official said that the accident took place at around 9:30 pm on Thursday and the injured have been identified as Sooraj, 20, and Nivedith Krishna, 20, both residents of Thiruvananthapuram.

Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Malayalam actor and producer Maniyanpilla Raju has been arrested regarding a hit-and-run-incident that has left two young men severally injured in Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday.

Where did the accident happen?

According to the initial information, before speeding away from the spot, the Malayalam actor's car near Trivandrum Club allegedly hit a two-wheeler that was carrying two young men, while he was attempting a sudden U-turn towards Kowdiar.

A police official said that the accident took place at around 9:30 pm on Thursday and the injured have been identified as Sooraj, 20, and Nivedith Krishna, 20, both residents of Thiruvananthapuram.

In the video, the actor can be seen speeding away from the scene instead of helping the injured people.

Later, both the injured men were rushed to the hospital. One of the them suffered leg and shoulder fractures and the other injured is being treated for head and spinal injuries.

What was the reason Maniyanpilla didn't stop?

After the accident, Maniyanpilla remained  unreachable for nearly ten hours and later informed the police that he will appear in the morning.

The 70-year-old actor on Friday morning arrived at the Museum police station and shared what happened the last night.

Later speaking to the media, the actor said that, "I panicked after the accident and returned home. I am a cancer survivor and am currently suffering from chikungunya."

Maniyanpilla also said that he informed the people to help the injured youngsters.

"I was unable to help them at that point. My wife was also alone at home. However, I informed others to help the injured," he said.

The police has registered a case against the Malayalam actor under Section 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 134 (A) and 134 (B) of the Motor Vehicles Act. He was let out on station bail.

The case was registered against the driver of the car regarding rash driving, negligent act endangering life and refusing to attend to a person injured in an accident.

The police said that after registration, he was released on station bail.
